I figured that much...  Good luck.  Let's see at least one VA school other than Richmond make it to Nationals this year!  :gavel:

Well, other than us, of course  :)

My colleagues, the Spiders of the University of Richmond, will be in attendance.

I'm from William & Mary.  For us, this is our fourth year in competition (my second), and we feel really good about our chances... We'll see how it goes.

Hey Marshall, you're from W&M?  You know, my father is currently an employee of Colonial Williamsburg.  Works in the bookstore, as he couldn't take wearing britches to work every day.  Anyway, what year are you?  And do you enjoy yourself down there?  I've visited a few times, and I quite like the place.

Yeah, I love it down here, it's an interesting little city.  Of course, there always seems to be trouble between the college and city, the students and the administration, and whatnot, but that just makes life a little more fun.

Hey Josh, your dad doesn't happen to deal with the textbooks and stuff, does he?  I'm interested cause I'm in charge of a student movement started a few years ago to have a used book sale, where we collect each others textbooks, and sell them at a rate that not only undercuts the bookstore (they usually charge 70-80% of the new price for a book for the used ones; we charge 50%), but pays the selling student back about the same as what they would get from the Bookstore, if not more.  I'd hate to be in semi-competition with him.

Anyways, I'm a sophomore, so after College Pk (and hopefully Richmond!) I'll have 2 more years of this.

Josh, are you from the area?  If so, what do you think of Big Willy?

Jeff,
He actually works at the bookstore at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor's Center, not the W&M one.  And being a frequent victim of college bookstore gouging, I commend you on your business venture.

I've heard good things about your guys' program, though.  I hope to meet you guys at a tournament someday.  Best of luck at College Park.

I'm actually not from the area.  I grew up in the suburbs of New York, good old Westchester Co.  When I graduated high school, my parents moved out.  My mom went to Tucson, AZ to be with her beau, a professor of English at University of Arizona (which is where I get my Wildcat loyalty, JayZ), and my dad went to Williamsburg.

Although I am curious about what the "Big Willy" reference is...do tell.

You mean you don't know that Marshall Wythe is the big, big name at William and Mary? I have college debate trophies from 1971 named for the adored MW!

Whoa, you serious?

Oh, and Josh: I'm glad to hear he's not part of the evil empire... CW is an awesome place!

And the "Big Willy" reference is one of the many nicknames for Williamsburg, this one being self imposed.

Woo hoo!  I have been insulted by Bloch!  My membership in the p.c community has been cemented!

Today truly is a glorious day...

And I think the fact that CW is awesome was brought home to me the first time I visited my dad there.  We're walking down the main street there, and my father says "Oh, look, there's my friend Mark."  Then he calls to him, "Excuse me!  General, sir!"

Because Mark was George Washington.  How many times do you get to say you met George Washington over Christmas break?

By the way, the letters in "George Washington" can be rearranged to spell "I gnaw hog estrogen."

I just thought everyone would like to know that.

Another good story of CW, relayed by a parent of a friend (also a WM alum)... of a quick note, this was back when the local airport, Newport News-Williamsburg International, was known as Patrick Henry Airport:

A woman was taking a tour of Colonial Williamsburg, and noticed that everyone involved with the tour, even the guide, were taking the Colonial acting very seriously, and it was annoying her.  She even asked someone the year, and was told that it was 1776 (the year they were acting out that season in CW).  Well, even though it's hard to figure out why the colonial themed acting was bothering her, it was.  She finally asked the guide what the weather was today.

The guide responds, "Well, I can call Patrick Henry and check on that for you."

The woman just gives her a look of exasperation, and walks away.

And with any luck, saying it twice means twice the luck! :)
