Joel,  I believe that it is in the team's best interest that you don't use a Southeran drawl.  I think that it would be too painfull to sit and listen to a nine minute close, if you used a drawl.

I agree with Jenn.
Joel, you have fake brothers, you're contemplating a fake accent.  I shudder to think what's coming next. :o

Mizzou Mock,
That's pretty cool.  What did the judges think of that colloquial way of speaking?

MockGod,

I actually prefer my Southeran drawl, but I am loosing it. :(  I guess that is what I get for moving up North.

Drake Chick:

Did I meet you at Loras?

Anyhoo, the judges didn't make any specific comments about it one way or another.  I think the bigger problem was that they hadn't laid any foundation for their witness' testimony  :p

Fake accents are dumb.  I don't mean to go off on a rant here but ... Your job is to make sure the judges understand what you are saying.  Nothing more.  The way some teams play it, you'd think one of the qualifications for being an expert witness is an Oxbridge accent.  Even worse, witnesses that assume "southern" accents when playing uneducated characters.  It's downright insulting to see students continually play to that stereotype.  I vividly recall a conversation with the coach of a southern-based team.  This coach was incredibly frustrated at all the ditzy southern characters she regularly sees.  Even more aggravating, this coach conceded, was that her own students exaggerated their natural accents ... because it scores well!!

If you have a natural accent, fine.  But faking one is just plain silly.  I've seen very few people pull it off well.  They are either slightly off from the start, or fall out of it under heavy cross.  There are better ways to make yourself believable as a dr or a dope.

Of course, that's just my opinion.  I could be wrong. :p

Fake Southern is good if you do it well.  There are some Yanks who go to school in the South who just start slipping into it without realizing they're doing it.  If it sounds semi-authentic and not cheesy, I think it's fine.  Country- bad.  Southern- good.

I got looks a couple of times in London from Shaena when I slipped into the British accent. It sounded like theirs she just knew it wasn't real. I do that when I'm surrounded by those with accents... :o

*lol*

I'm from the very northwest corner of Iowa, so I naturally have a bit of a Minnesota accent. It's quite ironic that the word "Minnesota" is the word that is most noticable when pronounced in said accent. :)

let's not make too much fun of the bad accents.  Some of us are blessed to be from the South.  We HAVE AN ACCENT.  I use "ya'll" on a regular basis, and judges seem to like it.  Let's not knock the southern accen t

come on Brad, even you see advantages and disadvantages of accents.  Accents are fun!  They define a person.  Don't take it to heart   :inlove:
