Why are some people listed with awards not included in the tournaments with the 25% cut-off (for example Quaker Classic, Happy Valley, Colonial, Macalester, Red Cedar, Swear Me in Scotty) but others who won two at 25%+ and then another tournament under the threshold, are not?

          Ramblin’ Wreck Addendum:

The Tab Summary for Georgia Tech’s Ramblin' Wreck was just released! Ramblin' Wreck was 50% national teams, so award winners from this tournament earn spots on our top competitors list. We recognize that there may be some concern that some of the teams present were not the actual A teams from these schools since this was the same weekend as Downtown, but even eliminating the duplicates from Downtown this tournament is at 33% national teams. We have some new awards for a member of our previous list and some new top competitors.

First, the new awards for members of our previous list:
          • Christina Peterman, Xavier (Scarlet & Grey 18D; Cornshucker 18P; Ramblin’ Wreck 18D)
          • Laura Jackson, EKU (Spartan Throwdown 20P; Cornshucker 17P; Ramblin’ Wreck 18P)
          • Zeke Starr, UT Chattanooga (ToRo 19D; GOT 18P; Ramblin’ Wreck 17D)

Second, we have some new top competitors:

          Attorneys:
          • Margaret Shin, Georgia (GCF 17D; Ramblin’ Wreck 19P)
          • Aaron Ainsworth, Vanderbilt (Scarlet & Grey 18D; Ramblin’ Wreck 17D)

          Witnesses:
          • Madison Irene, Chicago (GCF 15P; Ramblin’ Wreck 16P)

Teams with more than one top performer:

          Michigan: 3
          EKU: 3

I would like to point out how incredibly east coast biased this is. I agree that some east coast tournaments may be more difficult than many in the west, but this list includes not even one person from the top teams from the Average American Invitational or any other tournament further west than Michigan appears on this list. Seems incredibly ridiculous to leave out half the country.

Longfellowistheworst, you bring up a good point. Unfortunately tournaments with more than 25% of previous nationals competitors is a very selective group of tournaments and as the east coast tends to have a higher concentration of both tournaments as well as nationals competitors they naturally tend to have more of these top tier tournaments. We wanted to find some way to be as fair as possible and use a consistent metric. Benjamin Markstone (Northwestern) is the only competitor at AAMTI to make our list (after Chicago Fire addendum), and you bring up a fair point that this definitely isn't illustrative of the competitors there.

A lot of the reason for this disparity is because many west coast tournaments have such large programs that they will have many nationals quality programs A-E teams compete. Since only two teams can go to nationals, having all 5 teams can deflate the percentage of national's teams even if those 5 teams are all from a top tier program.

This post was not meant to be the only list of top tier attorneys/witnesses, it was meant to prompt a discussion. If you think there are other top west coast mockers we are missing list them! Tell us who we are forgetting. This is a forum, it is meant for people to share their thoughts.

Please understand thought that it isn't meant to be a baised list, we apologize for "leaving out half the country," but we were very explicit with how we determined this list. Ranking at two "top tournaments" makes the list, and "top tournaments" are defined as having 25% previous nationals competitors.

There are most definitely other very strong mockers that aren't on our list, so add them!

I'll add an attorney: Nick Barile, Haverford (Quaker 18P, Rebel-Trojan 18D, Seminole Smackdown 19P) - he outranked Sarah Stebbins in his trial against GT. Additionally, while none of these invitationals are top tier tournaments as MockAnalysisIsMyDrug mentions, each of them were definitely in a secondary tier of majority ORCS teams tournaments. The reality that for small programs with standout attorneys, they can't get into these top tournaments so it is near impossible for them to make our list (as Longfellowistheworst mentioned). I consider success at 3 of these middle-top tier tournaments worthy of making this list.

I saw Nick Barile compete at UNLV, can confirm he was really good. I have some others to add who just barely missed the cutoff but are still very impressive:

                  - Allison Du, Yale (Awards at Yale, Happy Valley)
                  - Rohan Nijhawan, Berkeley (Awards at GAMTI, UCLASSIC)
                  - Mary-Preston Austin, Wheaton (Awards at ... too many to count. It's insane, just look at the link below)
                  - Joanna Jandali, Arizona (Awards at AAMTI, Gunslinger, UCLASSIC)
                  - Enrico Trevisani, Arizona (Awards at AAMTI, Gunslinger, UCLASSIC)
