  • Open Bid Watch

As someone who has had to spend the later weeks of regionals constantly updating the Open Bid List, I figured some people might be interested in seeing where Open Bids could be created at the upcoming regionals. Here's a rundown of where potential open bids could pop up. Currently, there are 11 open bids already available.

Chapel Hill: 1 potential new open bid
Duke has already earned two bids, so if Duke C earns a bid next weekend a new open bid will be created.

Columbus: 4 potential new open bids
Indiana has already earned two bids, so Indiana C/D could create up to 2 more bids
OSU already has a bid, so if B/C both get bids a new open bid will be created.
PSU already has a bid, so if A/B both get bids a new open bid will be created.

Jackson: 2 potential new open bids
Georgia has already earned two bids, so Georgia C/D could create up to 2 more bids

Lawrence: 1 potential new open bid
Northwestern A/B are here, while C is in Ypsilanti. If all three get a bid, one new open bid will be created.

New Haven: 1 potential new open bid
Brown A is here, while B/C are in New Rochelle. If all three get a bid, one new open bid will be created.

    New Rochelle: 0
Brown B/C would have to earn bids here, combined with Brown A getting a bid in New Haven, to create a new open bid.

Tempe: 4 potential new open bids
UC Irvine has two bids already, so if B/C get out two more open bids will be created.
UCLA already has one bid, so if A/C get out one more open bid will be created.
USC already has one bid, so if A/B get out one more open bid will be created.

Williamsburg: 0 potential new open bids
No new open bids can be created here this weekend.

Ypsilanti: 1 potential new open bid
Michigan already has one bid, so if B/C get out one more open bid will be created.
Northwestern C would have to earn a bid here, combined with Northwestern A/B getting a bid in Lawrence, to create a new open bid.

Toal potential new open bids: 14, which would lead to a total of 25 open bids.

Hopefully people find this interesting. Let me know if I messed up or missed anything.

Fresno has some as well. Berkeley A and C where Berkeley already has two bids. UCLA E if another UCLA team gets a bid. San Diego has three teams (one at Fresno, not sure where the other two are) who could all earn bids. And Seattle has a bunch of schools with 3 or 4 teams so if 3 of them break that would cause an open bid

adamsel You are correct. I should have clarified that I was only looking at regionals this upcoming weekend.

Princeton C withdrew from Williamsburg, bringing that regional down to 23 teams. That means that instead of having 8 bids to the Richmond ORCS, there are now only 7 bids. That means that an extra Open Bid has been crated, bringing the current number of Open Bids to 12.

Drake dropped both of its teams from Lawrence due to inclement weather. That means that Lawrence will now have 7 bids instead of 8, and there are now 13 Open Bids. the new Open Bid was created in Cedar Rapids.

Pretty hefty number of open bids now, but there are going to be a ton of really good programs left out because they ended with 4.5 wins.

Pretty interesting week of regionals. While I don't know who exactly earned open bids, based on the results released so far we can see that a solid number of new open bids were created.

Chapel Hill: 1 new open bid
Duke C created a new open bid.

              Columbus: 2 new open bids
OSU B/C created a new open bid.
PSU A/B created a new open bid.

              Jackson: 2 new open bids
Georgia C/D created 2 new open bids

              Lawrence: 1 new open bid
One I forgot to mention before: Cornell College C created a new open bid.

              New Haven: 0

              New Rochelle: 0

              Tempe: 2 new open bids
UC Irvine created a new open bid.
USC A/B created a new open bid.

Williamsburg: 0 potential new open bids
No new open bids can be created here this weekend.

              Ypsilanti: 1 new open bid
Michigan A/C created a new open bid.

That's 9 new open bids created, bringing my count to 22 open bids, although the AMTA website says there are currently only 21 open bids, so I may be off a bit here. Will post a preview for next weekend soon, and let me know if there's any mistakes here.

There are 21 open bids currently. There is one weekend left of regionals. Here's a look at where more open bids can be created in week 3:

Buffalo: 1 potential new open bid
NYU already has one bid, NYU A/B can create one new open bid.

Colorado Springs: 2 potential new open bids
Fresno State A/F are here, while B/D are in Fresno. If all four get bids, two new open bids will be created.

Fresno: 4 potential new open bids
Cal Berkeley already has two bids, so Cal Berkeley A/C can create two new open bids
UCLA already has two bids, so UCLA E can create one new open bid
UC San Diego already has two bids, so UC San Diego A can create one new open bid
See Colorado Springs for Fresno State

Houston: 0 potential new open bids

Louisville: 3 potential new open bids
Miami already has two bids, so Miami C can create one new open bid
Rhodes already has two bids, so Rhodes B/D can create two new open bids

Minneapolis: 2 potential new open bids
Chicago already has 2 bids, so Chicago A/B can create two new open bids

Orlando: 7 potential new open bids
Central Florida already has a bid, so UCF A/B can create a new open bid
Florida already has two bids, so Florida A/B can create two new open bids
FSU already has two bids, so FSU B/D can create two new open bids
Emory already has a bid, so Emory A/B can create one new open bid
Georgia Tech already has two bids, so Georgia Tech C can create one new open bid

Owings Mills: 3 potential new open bids
Wesleyan already has a bid, so Wesleyan B/C can create one open bid
Rutgers already has a bid, so Rutgers A/D can create one new open bid
Johns Hopkins already has a bid, so Johns Hopkins B/C can create one new open bid

Princeton: 1 potential new open bid
Tufts already has a bid, so Tufts B/C can create a new open bid

Seattle: 5 potential new open bids
If Gonzaga gets its three teams out, one new open bid will be created
If Washington gets its three teams out, one new open bid will be created
If Portland gets its three teams out, one new open bid will be created
If Oregon gets its four teams out, two new open bids will be created

Washington DC: 4 potential new open bids
Patrick Henry already has two bids, so Patrick Henry C/D can create up to two more open bids
North Carolina already has a bid, so North Carolina B/C can create one more open bid
American already has a bid, so American B/C can create one more open bid

By my count, that means there are 32 open bids to be created this weekend. In the unlikely even that every possible open bid is created, that would lead to a total of 53 open bids. I would guess that we will end up somewhere around 15 new open bids after this weekend, but that's a rough estimate.

Also, we do know that some team was cautioned and banned from ORCS this year, but we do not know what team it was. If that team gets a bid or multiple bids, that would also create new open bids. Like we saw this past weekend, teams dropping out of regionals and brining the total umber of teams below 24 will also create open bids.

Certainly we won't get up to the 53 total bids, but I want to flag some very likely open bids to be created: Cal, UCSD, Chicago A/B, UCF A/B, Florda A/B, FSU B, Rutgers, some selection of the PNW teams (Gonzaga, Washington, Portland, Oregon), Rhodes B, NYU A/B. Thats plenty more open bids to go around.

happygolucky I don't think we're gonna get any open bids from PNW teams. I believe Gonzaga, Washington and Portland have three teams competing while Oregon has four and while I'm expecting at least two of them to get two bids out, I think its extremely unlikely that one gets three bids out. Possible? Yes. But "vey likely", absolutely not.

Fair enough, I'm just remembering a recent year when Gonzaga got all three of its teams out, and I believe that was with a Cal or Stanford at the PNW regional. I guess this is my "bold prediction."

NYU B has withdrawn from Buffalo, leaving that regional at 19 teams. According to Rule 6.6(2)a, this means that the Buffalo regional should now have only 6 bids. this means that a new open bid has been created in Central Islip, bringing the total number of open bids to 22.

Does AMTA have to reduce it to six? The regional team assignments currently has 7 bids at Buffalo still.

Rule 6.6(2)a covers the allocation of bids to regionals with fewer than 20 teams. the last sentence of that rule says "Regionals with 18 or 19 bid- eligible teams shall have six bids to the opening round championship." There doesn't look to be any language giving AMTA leeway to keep a regional of that size at 7 bids, but I of course could be wrong. Based on my understanding of that rule, Buffalo should only have 6 bids now. It may be that AMTA just hasn't updated the website yet, or they may be looking for a team to move to Buffalo so they can keep seven bids there.

AMTA website has been updated. I also missed that New Mexico dropped out of Colorado Springs, which puts that regional at 19 teams and also means that it will have 6 bids. This creates an open bid in Geneva, bringing the total number of open bids to 23.
