We just finished the last of the s'mores and put out the bonfires. With the barbecue -- and the first two rounds -- in the books, here is our Final Four:

    Rhodes v. Irvine

    Virginia v. Furman

It was an impressive day for the southern teams, as they won three out of the four divisions (and Duke was just one ballot from winning its division). Good luck to everyone tomorrow, and stay out of the water.

Here is some trivia from this year’s Bracket Challenge. After day one, 16 participants still have perfect brackets. If you believe in the “wisdom of crowds,” then good things are in store for Virginia. More participants – 40 percent – picked Virginia to win than any other team. Rhodes, Furman, Irvine were the next most common selections, so participants have been guessing well. As for the Alex Block Award, the most popular pick was “the field” (i.e., none of the 12 listed students). The leading vote-getters were Furman’s Katherine Martin, UCLA’s Iain Lampert, and Miami’s Mr. Block.

I've also attached our Welcome Packet, which includes team introductions and stats from our tournament history. Enjoy!

The tournament could not have been closer. Both semi-final rounds tied 3-3 and were decided by a point differential tiebreaker. That put Virginia and Rhodes in the finals, and the finals were decided by a single point. With 3 wins, 2 losses, and a tie, congratulations to our new tournament champion: the University of Virginia. Iain Lampert earned the most total ranks, with 57 out of 60. And Irvine alum Neil Thakore won the Bracket Challenge. Expect a full tab summary after Thanksgiving.

Thanks to everyone who attended! Safe travels--

UCLA thanks Brown, Furman, NYU, and UVa for eight fantastic rounds! Congratulations to UVa, who cleaned our collective clocks, on a well-deserved victory.

Props in particular to Brown's Joshua Block (who's gonna be a great coach), NYU's Jacob Hansen and Deanna Oliver (who are en route to All-Americans), and UVa's Amanda Swanson (best accent in a mock trial attorney), Will Cadigan (best accent in a mock trial witness), and Rich Ressler (best name in a mock trial anything).
